Bilateral Coordination
Bilateral Coordination is the ability to use both sides of the body at the same time in a coordinated manner. This tells us that both side of the brain are communicating appropriately. This includes using both sides at the same time. For example, holding the paper with one hand while coloring with the other. It also includes using the same action at alternate times (reciprocal pattern), such as walking.
Children develop bilateral skills in stages. Babies are given two objects and they bang them together (symmetrical). As they grow they learn they can stabilize one hand while using the other hand to play (hold a bottle with one hand). Eventually, they can achieve a higher level skill of being able to use both hand at the same time but each hand doing something differently i.e. one hand hold the paper and the other hand writing.
